What is Transition Larkhall?

Transition Larkhall is a voluntary community-led initiative with the aim of supporting Larkhall as it adapts to the changes demanded by the twin challenges of Climate Change and Peak Oil. These two issues combined require us to reappraise the ways in which we presently live our lives and to start making choices about how we want to live our lives in the future. Transition Larkhall exists in order to support this process.

We have set ourselves up as an unincorporated association in order to provide an agreed set of aims and objectives and deal with financial and other administrative issues. You can download a copy of our constitution here.

As part of the grass roots Transition Movement we are one of many Transition initiatives that are now springing up all over the UK and various parts of the world. Alongside the local groups the Transition Network works to provide a supporting role.

The Task

Change is coming (or rather, is already here!) whether we like it or not. In face of this reality we believe that it's better to start acting now. One of our principal tasks as a Transition initiative is to develop an Energy Descent Action Plan (EDAP). The EDAP is a core document that is developed through an open and inclusive process the purpose of which is to enshrine and communicate the path Larkhall is to take from today's energy rich world to tomorrow's energy poor one. The more of us that get involved in this task the more likely we are to get it right. If you believe you have something to offer (everyone has!) and would like to get involved check out our membership page.

Our Vision

It's a big challenge to say the least. However, it would also be a big mistake to focus solely on the threats and remain blind to the very real opportunities that they bring in their shadow. By galvanising the local community into action, by making the most of the skills, energy and good will of local people we can, over the coming years, not only strengthen that community in the face of these crises but transform it into a place where our needs are met.

It is now time to start building a future for Larkhall that is equitable and sustainable through actions that bring about a resilient, self-reliant and ecologically conscious community able to thrive in a low-energy world.
